President opens Canadapura Children’s Village:
The Canadapura Children’s Village built at Godigamuwa, Netolpitiya, with donations made by the Chief Sanganayaka of Canada Ven Wijayasiripura Pannasara Thera, MA, Sri Lankans living in Canada and Canadians was ceremonially opened by President Mahinda Rajapaksa on Sunday. Loan scheme for women

Regional Development Bank (RDB), Kandy launched a special loan scheme for women, to grant loans at an interest rate of eight percent.

The loan amount is from Rs 200,000 to Rs 500,000.

“This is a boon for women as the rate of interest is very palpable when compared with other banks,” a participant said.

The RDB spokesman said, the concept of banks has changed as it should facilitate for the economic development of a country.

This loan scheme is a further empowerment for women’s social status, he added.

M.I. Mohideen of No. 20 -3/3 Rudra Mawatha, Colombo 6 is suffering from end stage renal failure.

He is dialysis dependant. His consultant has suggested a kidney transplantation and needs an 'O' positive kidney.

Postponement of the Mobile Consular Service

The Mobile Consular Service organized by the Ministry of External Affairs which was scheduled to be held in Killinochchi and Mullaitivu on July 13 and 14, 2011 has been postponed. The new date will be notified later, states a release from the Ministry of External Affairs.


Death of veteran star Stanley Perera

Veteran artiste Stanley Perera passed away after a brief illness. He is the father of popular actress Sabeetha Perera.

Stanley Perera was 78 at the time of his death. He made his debut appearance in the Sinhala cinema at the age of 17 through the 'Kelehanda' film. In addition he acted in over 50 films. The last film he made his contribution to was 'Salabak Handai'.

His remains are presently lying at Jayaratne Funeral Parlour, Borella. Funeral will be held at 5 pm today at the General Cemetery, Kanatta.
