Army extends welfare projects to Jaffna islands
The Security Forces Headquarters - Jaffna (SF-J), is expanding its
community welfare projects being carried out in the Jaffna mainland to
Jaffna islands. a stock of agriculture equipment, school uniforms and
boat engines were distributed among civilians in Kayts and Punguduthivu
islands recently.
The seventeenth Battalion of the Gemunu Watch (17 GW) arranged the
donation under the guidance of Commander Security Forces - Jaffna (SF-J)
Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe.

Agriculture equipment to the value of Rs. 75,000 were given away to
50 farmers selected from Kayts, Mandathivu and Punguduthivu islands at
the Kayts Divisional Secretariat.
Commanding Officer of the 17 GW Lieutenant Colonel Senaka Premavansa
and his troops donated boat engines to Fisheries Societies in
Punguduthivu, Velanai, Mandathivu, Thambadi and Nerenchimunai.
The value of the stock is Rs. 1 million. Meanwhile, with sponsorship
of an engineer and Director of Seagull Residencies (Pvt) Ltd. S.
Kirubanandan, readymade school uniforms were donated to 310 students of
Nagadeepa Nagapusani Primary school, Velanai Maha Vidyalaya and
Mankumbhan Primary school.
“I wish that activities of this nature will promote good relations
among civilians, Army and the government.
‘This is the first welfare programme launched by the Army for
islanders and Security Forces Headquarters - Jaffna will continue this
in future,’ General Officer Commanding 51 Division Major General Janaka
Walgama said.
Velanai Divisional Secretary P. Nandagopal said, “We had to undergo
lots of difficulties during the LTTE period.
‘Now we live happily in peace.’
Principal of Velanai west Maha Vidyalaya Jayadevi Sri Kantharasa also
addressed the meeting.
Students of Velanai Central College presented a cultural performance.
Student of St. Anthony’s College Kayts also participated. |
