Illangakoon new IGP

Cabinet has approved Senior DIG of Police N K Illangakoon’s
appointment as the new Inspector General of Police with immediate
effect. The Cabinet granted the approval on a proposal by President
Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Environment Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa announcing this at
yesterday’s cabinet press briefing said that Illangakon joined the
Police Service on May 20, 1982 as an Assistant Superintendent of Police.
Ilangakoon has served in various parts of the country as
Superintendent of Police, Senior Superintendent of Police, Deputy
Inspector General of Police and Senior Deputy Inspector General of
Police.
He is a graduate of the University of Colombo. He obtained a post
Graduate Degree in Criminology and Police Management from the University
of Great Britain in 1996.
He is the most senior officer in the Police service.
