The External Affairs Ministry Consular Division computerised system was launched at the ministry last morning by Deputy External Affairs Minister Neomal Perera. External Affairs Minister Prof G L Peiris took action to implement this project with IOM collaboration. The 17th Annual Award Ceremony of the Bandaranaike International Diplomatic Training Institute (BIDTI) was held under the patronage of External Affairs Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris at the Lakshman Kadirgamar Institute for International Relations and Strategic Studies auditorium. Here, a diploma holder who successfully completed the course receiving his certificate from the minister.


 

Pedestrian knocked down

A pedestrian knocked down by a motorcyclist along the Kongodamulla-Kudumirisa road in Kochchikade succumbed to his injuries while being rushed to the Negombo hospital on Wedensday morning. The deceased was identified as Jayasuriya Arachchige Don Seimen Jayasuriya (80) of Kongodamulla.

The body was handed over to his relatives. The alleged motorcyclist taken into police custody is receiving treatment at the Negombo hospital under police custody.


Three suspects held

Three suspects were arrested by officers of the STF at Polhena, Kelaniya for being in possession of 17.8 kilograms of ganja and handed over to Kelaniya Police.

The suspects were due to be produced in Hulftsdorp Cour t No 2 yesterday. Kelaniya Police are investigating.


Prize giving

The Annual Prize giving of the Colombo South International College will be held at the College Auditorium on July 2 at 3.15 pm.


Desmond Fernando memorial oration

Senior Member of the Bar, and Former Principal Sri Lanka Law College R K W Goonesekera will deliver, Desmond Fernando memorial oration today 3 pm at the Auditorium of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka. Volume XVII of the BASL Law Journal dedicated to the memory of the late Desmond Fernando, P.C. will also be released at this function.


Six Lankans freed from syndicate

The Malaysian Immigration Department raided a budget hotel at Jalan Wong Ah Fook and freed six Sri Lankan men from the clutches of a human trafficking syndicate.

Johor Immigration Deputy Assistant Director Gajendra Bahadur said acting on a tip-off immigration officers saved the Sri Lankan men, who were confined to two rooms at the hotel at 2.20 pm. Bernama


Justice minister leads AALCO

Justice Minister Rauff Hakeem was elected as the New President of the Asian-African Legal Consultative organization (AALCO) at its 50th sessions which began in Colombo recently.

Delegates from 40 Afro-Asian nations are attending the sessions.

Addressing the sessions after his election, Minister Hakeem said he will strive to steer the organization forward in a successful manner and take steps to resolve all unresolved legal issues in the two regions.

He said he will also make an effort to increase the membership of the organization by getting more countries to it.


Suddek Oba Amathai at Elphinstone

One of the most critically-acclaimed Sinhala dramas in recent times, Suddek Oba Amathai will go on stage at Elphinstone Theatre, Maradana at 3.30 pm and 6.30 pm today.

The play is written and directed by well-known author and columnist, Udayasiri Wickramaratne, and features stellar performances by well-known actors and actresses. The cast includes Jayalath Manoratne, Nalin Pradeep Udawelage, Madani Malwattage and others.

The score is composed by Lalith Wickramaratne. Rohan Samaradiwakara is the man behind the set, while Ranga Samarakoon handles lighting.

Susil Wickramasinghe is the production manager.
