All identified mosquito breeding places to be reinspected

Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena has instructed PHIs and health authorities to re-inspect all mosquito breeding places belonging to persons who had been given notices to clean within two weeks, a Health Ministry spokesman said.

According to the spokesman, the re-inspection will be done soon as instructed by Minister Sirisena. Persons who have ignored notices and still have mosquito breeding sites within their properties will be prosecuted. Legal action will be taken against them under the Mosquito Breeding Control Act Number 12 of 2007. Health authorities discovered 121,640 places with high mosquito larvae density and another 16,010 places with mosquito larvae during the National Mosquito Control Week which commenced on June 20 and ended on June 26.

Legal action was taken against 10,067 persons who kept mosquito breeding places with larvae in their properties. The number of persons warned is 258,268. A total of 468,841 places were inspected during the week, he said. The week implemented countrywide with the assistance of health authorities, armed forces, civil defence committees and Presidential Task Force which was set up to control dengue. A total of 305 MOH divisions were inspected during the week, he added.
