under 20 Singer League Tournament 2010 champions St Peter’s College team with their trophy

St Peter's College, Bambalapitiya received the Division I Group 'A' Rugby Championship Trophy 2010 in the under 20 Singer League Tournament at the awards ceremony at St Bishop's College auditorium on Monday while Kingswood College, Kandy received the runner up Trophy.

The event organized by Sri Lanka Schools Rugby Football Association (SLSRFA) together with Singer (Sri Lanka) after a couple of months delay due to unavoidable circumstances. All the champions and runners up in Division I and II from three groups (A, B, C) each and two groups in Division III received Trophies and certificates of participation.

SLSRFA President Ranjith Chandrasekara addressing the gathering said that schools rugby has three main principles education, health and discipline. The Association took the responsibility of enhancing player skills while maintaining the educational background and the safety and fitness of the players.

It was also important to create a joyful yet competitive rugby season while keeping to its formalities, he said. He also thanked the sponsors for their continuing support for the game and hoped the same in the future.

Speaking at the occasion, the chief guest, Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union President Air Chief Marshal Roshan Gunatilleke emphasized the importance of being a sportsman in order to develop leadership skills, to train decision making and to learn to act tactically.

Further he added that by working as a team and being a great player is the foundation to be a leader. Roshan Gunatilleke also hoped great success during the tour to Hong Kong for Asian Under 20 Tournament. It was also noted that extending the sponsorship to division two and three levels was a key factor to attract remote schools to the tournament thus extending a hand to uplift the game in among new participating schools.

Singer (Sri Lanka) Marketing Director Nazar Majeed, Sri Lanka Society of Rugby Football Referees Vice President Wimal Perera also expressed their views. Nazar Majeed also handed over the sponsorship cheque for the under 20 National Rugby Team.
