Science College Mount Lavinia put up a splendid performance to knock
out the defending champions Dharmaraja College Kandy from the
quarterfinals of the Cup championship on the opening day of the Milo
schools Under 18 ten-a-side rugby tournament which began at Longden
Place yesterday.
Science College held the Rajans to a thrilling seven all draw and
then went on to beat Zahira College Maradana 34-5 that ensured their
place in the quarterfinals and a match against Vidyartha College Kandy.
Meanwhile the newcomers Lalith Athulathmudali MV Ratmalana put up a
giant killing performance to reach the Cup championship quarterfinals.
The underdogs making their debut in the division one tournament and
competing in group 'F' edged out Mahanama College 5-nil during extra
time in an exciting first round fixture.
With this upset victory Lalith Athulathmudali MV topped their group
and qualified for the last eight and booked a quarterfinal place against
Trinity College Kandy.
The last year's runners up St Peter's College struggled to reach the
quarterfinals while overcoming their traditional rivals St Joseph's
College 7 nil in a close encounter from group 'H'.
