Photographer shot in Belfast sectarian clashes
IRELAND: A press photographer was shot in the leg and police were
pelted with petrol bombs as sectarian violence between Protestants and
Catholics in Belfast continued to rage on Wednesday.
The Press Association photographer was taken to hospital after being
hit in the lower leg, the British news agency reported.
Earlier, two people were hospitalised after suffering from gunshot
wounds, Northern Ireland police said Tuesday.
The violence erupted Monday after suspected Protestant gangs who
support British rule in the province attacked homes overnight in Short
Strand, a Catholic enclave in Protestant east Belfast, local officials
said.
The violence reignited late Tuesday as local television station UTV
reported that a man was seriously ill in hospital after his skull was
fractured by a breeze block. AFP
