Sri Lanka's longest bridge has been built on the Southern Expressway across the Benthara river, a Highways Ministry spokesman said.

The bridge 695 metres in length, 17 metres in width is located at the 128 kilometre of Southern expressway from Kottawa to Matara in the Aviththawa area of the Galle district. He said that the bridge has been built at a cost of Rs.1090 million.

The Kinniya bridge constructed across a lagoon in Kinniya was Sri Lanka's longest bridge earlier.

The 396-metre long and 10-metre wide Kinniya bridge on the A-15 highway links Trincomalee with Kinniya in the Eastern region.
