Investigations being conducted into alleged assault on TNA MPs -
Prime Minister
Prime Minister D M Jayaratne, yesterday stated that a special group
of officers were conducting a special investigation into the alleged
incident of assault on TNA Parliamentarians at Alaveddi in Jaffna.
The Prime Minister made this observation in Parliament in response to
a matter of privilege raised by TNA MP R Sampanthan.
The Prime Minister also stated that soon after the investigation was
over, the facts revealed at the investigation would be divulged in
Parliament.
He further said that the details with regard to the incident could
not be revealed, as investigations were in progress and at present,
evidence had been taken from 11 persons.
Prime Minister D M Jayaratne, further stated that he was informed
that some of the facts in the letter which had been forwarded to the
Police and Military Force by the TNA on June 21, were not correct.
He also stated that the Government regretted if such an incident had
occurred and investigations would reveal the truth in that regard.
The Prime Minister further stated that the Army and Police would
provide the necessary security, when the events of the sittings were
brought to their notice.
He also requested them to inform of the meetings organized for the
impending Local Government election in Jaffna after which the security
forces and police, would provide them with full security.
TNA MP Sampanthan requested the Government to investigate into the
Alaveddi incident and arrest the offenders.
R Sampanthan further stated that they were committed to working with
the government in finding an acceptable and long-lasting political
solution within a united country.
