Munchee introduces Kotalahimbutu biscuit
Ceylon Biscuit Limited (CBL) in keeping with their innovative
strategy introduced a Kotalahimbutu biscuit to the local market
yesterday.
Munchee Kotalahimbutu biscuit is the result of several years of
painstaking research and development activities initiated by CBL.
Kotalahimbutu is a prominent medicinal plant that is native to Sri Lanka
and South India and this is the first time in the world this
medication-rich plant has been utilized to develop a biscuit with a
medicinal composition.
Research and development work for the new Munchee Kotalahimbutu
biscuit commenced as a result of an agreement CBL and industrial and
Technology Institute (ITI) signed in 2004.
ITI Natural Products Division Head Dr Sirimal Premakumara spearheaded
this research.
Dr Premakumara said “It was very challenging to develop a biscuit
using Kotalahimbutu. Key focus was to introduce a biscuit that was tasty
and had a good visual appeal with an adequate medicinal effect.” He
further stated that carefully designed, well focused work resulted in
this innovative biscuit that is quite similar to any other biscuit in
the market.
