Kingswood, Amal IS enter semis

Kingswood College and Amal International Schools (Havelock Town)
entered the semi-finals of the all island schools under 17 ‘B’ Division
Basketball Championship organized by the Sri Lanka Schools Basketball
Association and the Kandy District Schools Basketball Association after
the two quarter-finals played at Kingswood College Basketball courts,
Kandy yesterday.
The semi-finals will be played at the same venue this morning. The
finals will be played at 4.30 p.m. The first semi-final will be between
Ananda College and Amal International School at 7 a.m. The second
semi-final between Kingswood College and St. Aloysius College, Galle
will be at 8.30 a.m. The consolation finals between the two losing
semi-finalists will be at 3 p.m.
In the quarter-finals played yesterday Kingswood College trounced
Alethea International School by 49 points to 26 after leading 24-13 at
the breather. The Kingswoodians did well in the first quarter leading
12-2. But the second quarter was evenly contested with the Kingswoodians
leading by a single point 12-11. But the third quarter saw the
Kingwoodians gaining a lead of 14-7 but the losers fought back in the
final quarter drawing level 11 all. The Kingswoodians owe their victory
to the sharp shooting of their skipper Theyshitha Walisundera who
contributed 22 points followed by Isuru Ekanayake 14 points. For Alethea
Ashan Fernando was the chief scorer with 14 points.
In the second quarter final, Amal International School beat Gateway
College, Kandy 58 points to 46 after a close tussle. At half time
winners led 27-21.
Though Amal International won the first quarter 17-11 but the losers
drew level 10 all in the second quarter. Gateway also won the third
quarter 17-14. But Amal International put up an excellent performance in
the last quarter winning comfortably 21-8 and also sealing their
victory. Top scorers for Amal International School were Ismail Ikram 22,
Dilshad Nizar 17. For Gateway College, Kandy Shane Jayawardena 20,
Shehan Perera 14 and Dilshika Pathirage 10 were the main scorers.
Anuradha Wijesinghe and Christopher Karunasinghe umpired both matches. |
