E.P. teacher transfers suspended

President Mahinda Rajapkasa directed Eastern Province Governor Rear
Admiral Mohan Wijewickrama to temporarily suspend all teacher transfers
in the Eastern Province with immediate effect, Presidential Advisor
A.H.M. Azwer told the Daily News last evening.
The decision was taken following discussions between the MPs
representing the Eastern Province and the President at a group meeting
held at Temple Trees yesterday.
The group comprising Minister A.L.M. Athaullah, Presidential Advisor
A.H.M. Azwer, Faizer Khazim, H.H.M.Haneef and Sriyani Abeysekara
accepted the suggestions made by Local Government and Provincial Council
Minister A.L.M. Athaullah and requested the President to appoint a Board
to effect transfers in the future.
One succumbs to injuries in three-wheeler mishap
Six persons including the driver were injured and admitted to the
Badulla hospital when a three wheeler plying on an estate road off the
Badulla- Thelbedda highway and fell into a 45 ft precipice on Sunday.
The injured included the driver and its passengers and three women
pedestrians were knocked down by the three wheeler.
One of the passengers later succumbed to his injuries at the
hospital. He was identified as Anekkalam Thangarajah 61 of Kennagolle
division, Kelbaddawatta, Badulla police are investigating.
Udavela Bandaranaike Vidyalaya to be upgraded

Udavela Bandaranaike Maha Vidyalaya of Minipe in the Uda-Dumbara
electorate has been selected by the Education Ministry in the
government’s programme to improve 1000 schools. This programme will
improve education and extracurricular activities in primary and
secondary schools islandwide. An official ceremony to launch the
development work was held on June 14 with Education Minister Bandula
Gunawardana participating.
Poson Bhakthi Gee
The annual "Poson Bhakthi Gee" recital by the students and teachers
of Belvoir College International, Dickmans Road, Colombo 05, will be
held on Tuesday, June 21 at Visakha Vidyalaya, Jeramias Dias Hall,
Vajira Road, commencing at 5 pm.
The programmes consists of 16 songs in three languages. The music
teacher Diana Wijesekera will direct the choirs.
Handicrafts exhibition
Shilpa 2011, the annual handicrafts exhibition of the National Crafts
Council under the Traditional Industries and Small Enterprise
Development Ministry will be held at the Sirimavo Bandaranaike Memorial
Conference Hall from October 27 to 30.
The exhibition will comprise best creations selected from nine
regional handicrafts Industries Exhibitions.
