ICLP offers academic programmes

The Institute for the Development of Commercial Law and Practice (ICLP), a prestigious non-profit organization, established to promote healthy principles and practices for the advancement of Commercial Law, offers comprehensive courses to cater to the needs of the commercial world. Diploma in Commercial Arbitration, ICLP-CCC Certificate Course on Shipping Law & Practice along with ad hoc seminars paves way to achieve this goal of the Institute.

Diploma in Commercial Arbitration has been an ongoing programme since 2004, with the goal of offering education of international arbitration standards with a view of contributing to the development of skills and advancement of the commercial sector. In the local arena, the use of commercial arbitration has gradually progressed, for several reasons for being quicker, simpler, and less expensive than traditional court process.

The diploma is designed to encourage students to develop an understanding of arbitration concepts and conducting of arbitration, acquiring expertise in solving commercial disputes and cultivate an awareness of the current commercial and legal environment. The seventh batch (2010/11) completed the final examinations this May and the results were released in June. ICLP has so far produced nearly two hundred diploma holders since 2004.

Concurrent to the diploma program ICLP in collaboration with the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce (CCC), an effective spokesman in the business sector, launched the ICLP-CCC Certificate Course on Shipping Law and Practice this January (2011) with the objective of enhancing the capacities of legal and practical aspects in the field catering to the developing demands in the shipping industry. The rapid developments of mega ports around the island would pave way for practical issues where legal expertise would be a prerequisite. This training programme would create an extra mile of the respective careers of the participants and would definitely advance the competence of the profession.

The lecture panel includes eminent professionals from both - legal and the practical industry covering the following areas- maritime law, carriage of goods by sea, Admiralty Law, international trade, port operations, marine insurance and custom formalities. The inaugural batch completed the final examinations this May and the results were released in June.

The Centre is now open for registration for the next session of the ICLP-CCC Certificate Course on Shipping Law and Practice which is scheduled to commence on the second of July on every Saturdays for 3-4 months at ICLP Arbitration Centre, 61, Carmel Road, Colombo 03.
