‘Good roads are essential for economic development as then only produce could be transported quickly, cheaply and safely, Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa said.

He made these observations when he inaugurated the carpetting of the Hunnasgiriya-Bambarabedda rural roads of seven kilometres distance at a meeting held in Hunnasiriya town.

Minister Rajapaksa said that in the past the people had been often cheated by politicians who make false promises just to please the people but this situation has been changed. After 2005 the government under the leadership of President Mahinda Rajapaksa did not resort to making false promises. They kept to their promises.

The Mahinda Chinthanaya envisages the country’s vast development by building roads, bridges, water schemes, harbours, air ports and electrification schemes. ‘People could see for themselves that these promises have been kept’, he said. Rajapaksa said that Central province Chief Minister Sarath Ekanayake is an indefatigable worker under whose guidance the province has seen much progress.

The 30-year war has come to an end and we must now think in terms of developing the country to make it a model in Asia. We are confident that this goal could be achieved.

Chief Minister Sarath Ekanayake said that a sum of Rs 743 lakhs has been allocated for the Hunnasigirya – Bambarabedda road development and once it is completed the farmers in the area will not have any difficulty in bringing their produce to town and from there it could be transported to various parts of the island.

Chief Minister Sarath Ekanayake tracing the past history of the country said when King Dutugemunu was engaged in war with King Elara to free the country of invaders, he entrusted the task of growing more food for the sustenance of the people to his brother Prince Saddha Tissa.
