Gates signals ‘modest’ US drawdown in Afghan war

US Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Saturday a “modest” number of American troops could be withdrawn from Afghanistan next month as he argued for sticking to the current war strategy.

China seeks to placate neighbours

China on Sunday sought to ease neighbours’ fears about its military ambitions and demanded respect from the international community as smaller Asian nations accused it of behaving like a bully. Defence Minister Liang Guanglie told a security forum in Singapore that “only by advocating democracy in international relations and respecting each other’s core interests and major concerns” could the region find “lasting peace, harmony and stability”.

Police break up protest by Indian guru

Indian police yesterday detained the country’s biggest yoga star and stormed his camp where thousands of followers were taking part in a demonstration and hunger strike against corruption. Police fired tear gas and used batons in a raid in the early hours on a vast tent in central New Delhi where Swami Baba Ramdev, a televised yoga guru, had begun fasting on Saturday.
