Dayaratne sets new Sri Lanka record

The selection trials for the selection of athletes was held at Mahinda Rajapakse International Sports Complex, Diyagama yesterday. At the trials none of the athletes reached the qualifying standards though a new Sri Lanka record was set up.

R W L Dayaratne who set up a new Sri Lankan record in javelin throw was only athlete came clesest to the standard se for the particular event. He threw a distance of 75.41 meters which surpassed his own record distance of 74.19 meters achieved in the previous occasion at the same venue.

The final trial was a series of selections for the 19 th Asian Athletic Championships which will be held in Kobe City, Japan from July 7 to 10. A total of 14 events were worked off with the participation of 71 athletes who qualified from the previous selection trial.

Javelin throw (men): 1. R W L Dayarathna (unattached) – 75.41 m (*NSLR), 2. J A Sajith Maduranga (Sri Lanka Army) – 69.25 m, 3. D S Ranasinghe (Sri Lanka Army) – 66.25 m.

High jump (women): 1. D K Ranasinghe (Sri Lanka Navy) – 1.74 m, 2. H M Nimesha Madushani (Galenbindunuwewa CC) – 1.70 m.

800 m (men): 1. T P K Mendis (Sri Lanka Army) – 1:50.70 secs.

800 m (women): 1. N G Rajasekara (Sri Lanka Army) – 2:15.24 secs, 2. A A N Sanjeewani (Sri Lanka Air Force) – 2:16.76 secs, 3. K H A D K N Kularathna (Sri Lanka Air Force) – 2:17.38 secs.

Long jump (men): 1. M Sampath Dissanayake (Sri Lanka Army) – 7.54 m, 2. D M L Koswaththa (Sri Lanka Air Force) – 7.48 m, 3. N P Dharmarathna (Sri Lanka Army) – 7.48 m.

Javelin throw (women): 1 B L Nadika Lakmali (Sri Lanka Army) – 50.85 m, 2. H L N Dilhani Lekamge (Sri Lanka Army) – 46.33 m, 3. P P S Clarence (Sri Lanka Air Force) – 37.66 m.

100 m (women): 1. H P S Buddhika (Sri Lanka Air Force) – 12.20 secs, 2. K G A S Dias (Sri Lanka Navy) – 12.24 secs, 3. Akshana Maralanda (Kandy DAA) 12.43 secs.

100 m (men): 1. P A R S Jayawardana (Sri Lanka Air Force) – 10.84 secs, 2. M S M Safran (Sri Lanka Army) – 10.86 secs, 3. R M G Chamara (Sri Lanka Army) – 10.97 secs.
