Woman held for alleged infanticide

Child thrown into well

A 37-year-old mother of two has been arrested by the Bingiriya Police for the alleged murder of her 15-day-old infant girl by throwing her into an abandoned well at Rathmalwala, Wellarawa.

The infant’s body was later fished out of the well on information given by a neighbour who had seen the body inside the well.

Hettipola Magistrate Buddhini Sirisena who held an on the spot inquiry directed the body to be sent to Chilaw JMO for a post mortem examination and report. The magistrate also ordered that the suspect mother be produced before the Hettipola Magistrate.

Infant’s alleged murder: Duo held

A 19-year-old girl and her lover were arrested by the Eppawala Police on Tuesday for the alleged murder of a 10-day-old infant girl and burying the body in a home garden plot.

Police said investigations revealed that the couple have had an illicit affair for a long time and the boy had left the girl when he came to know that she was pregnant. The girl had later given birth but neighbours who had noticed that the new born baby was missing, had alerted the police who arrested the girl on suspicion.

On interrogation, she had confessed to having killed the infant and buried the body. On hearing that the girl was under arrest, the boy had visited her home and following public information, police arrested him. The infant’s body was due to be exhumed yesterday for a magisterial inquiry. Investigations are continuing.
