An inmate of the Bogambara prison serving a jail sentence in
connection with a spate of robberies had robbed several sil uniforms
brought to the prison for distribution among inmates observing sil and
sold them to fellow prisoners.
This was revealed during investigations conducted by prison officials
into the loss of 50 uniforms out of 1,000 uniforms brought to the prison
prior to the Vesak Poya to be given to inmates observing sil.
The uniforms donated by Parliamentarian Lakshman Wasantha had been
brought and kept in the prison on the day prior to Poya for distribution
the following day.
When officials started the distribution on Poya day morning, they
were surprised to see 50 uniforms missing. Investigations had revealed
that the prisoner had robbed them the previous day and sold them to
fellow inmates.
