Dr Amunugama to chair UNESCAP Ministerial Segment

Amunugama, was unanimously selected to Chair the Ministerial Segment of
the 67th Sessions of the UNESCAP Commission in Bangkok. Dr Amunugama
also chaired the High-Level Panel discussion on contemporary economic
and financial issues relevant to the Asia-Pacific Region yesterday.

Over 60 governmental leaders from the Asia Pacific region gathered in
Bangkok, Thailand to discuss the social protection and development
agenda for the region. United Nations Economic and Social Commission for
Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) 67th Commission Sessions began on May 19
and concluded yesterday.
The 67th Commission sessions of UNESCAP was held under the theme
"Beyond the Crises" - the long-term perspectives on social protection
and development in Asia and the Pacific.
The Asia Pacific region emerged from the global financial crisis as a
growth driver and anchor of stability for the world economy in 2011.
High food and fuel prices and volatile capital flows pose fresh
challenges in the region.
The sessions involving senior governmental decision makers discussed
issues to seek regional solutions and the way forward.
Dr Amunugama also delivered the "Country Statement" in which he
underlined Sri Lanka's new economic climate following the military
defeat of the LTTE and the integration of the northern and eastern
provinces which are contributing significantly to the country's GDP.
