The Jaffna district has 150 Grama Niladhari vacancies. The lack of
Tamil language proficiency among applicants is the main reason for this.
Action will be taken to recruit new Grama Niladhari officers in the near
future, said Public Administration and Home Affairs Minister W. D. J.
Seneviratne. Minister Seneviratne was addressing the opening ceremony of
the newly built Sewa Piyasa office in Kudaththanai recently.
The minister also participated at the opening ceremony of the Sewa
Piyasa office in Katkwolam.
"Both these areas were affected by the tsunami. Some services such as
Grama Niladhari, Samurdhi Niladhari, family health service and
agriculture service are essential. Because of the lack of facilities,
the public have to travel a long distance to fulfill their needs. Sewa
Piyasa offices will be a boon to the public," Seneviratne said.
The Public Administration Ministry had spent Rs one million for each
Sewa Piyasa. Through these offices, residents in rural areas will be
able to obtain the services of the Grama Niladhari, Samurdhi Niladhari,
family health officer and Agriculture service officer under a one roof,
sources said. Traditional Industries and Small Enterprise Development
Minister Douglas Devananda, Public Administration and Home Affairs
Ministry Secretary P.B. Ekanayake also participated.
