Mosquito breeders:

Laws to impose spot fines

The Mosquito Breeding Control Act number 12 of 2007 is to be amended to impose spot fines for mosquito breeders and to reduce the time period from the two week deadline to one week for cleaning up mosquito breeding premises, a Health Ministry spokesman said.

Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena will submit a Cabinet memorandum to the Cabinet to amend the Act. A spot fine of not exceeding Rs 2,000 is to be introduced for mosquito breeders under the amendments. Only one week is to be given to them to clean mosquito breeding spots located within their compounds. They now get two weeks to complete the task.
