Justice Weeramantry to speak at Sustainability Knowledge Hub

The quarterly Sustainability Knowledge Hub organized by the Global
Compact Network Ceylon will feature Former Vice President of the
International Court of Justice (ICJ), Justice Christopher G Weeramantry
as the keynote speaker, to be held on May 11 from 5 pm onwards at the
Cat’s Eye Ballroom of the Ceylon Continental Hotel.
Global Compact Sustainability Knowledge Hub events which aim to
“Drive economic growth sustainably” by equipping the Sri Lankan
corporate sector with the necessary knowledge and skills required to
practice corporate sustainability. The forum is organized by Global
Compact Network Ceylon, the local network of the world’s largest
corporate citizenship initiative, the Global Compact.
Justice C G Weeramantry, Former Vice-President of the International
Court of Justice in the course of his professional career of over six
decades as lawyer, legal educator, domestic judge, international judge,
author and lecturer, has touched on a wide variety of topics essential
to international rule of law, cross-cultural understanding and peace
education. He has written over 250 articles which has been published in
various international journals and is the author of over 20 books and
lectured extensively on these topics and related subjects in over 50
countries.
His work contains a philosophy as well as a programme of action to
achieve these purposes. The Weeramantry International Centre for Peace
Education and Research (WICPER) was founded by him in 2001, has a vast
corpus of research and writing as an information base from which to
develop it programmes. Justice Weeramantry received the UNESCO Prize for
Peace Education 2006, the Right Livelihood (Alternative Nobel) Award
2007 and the Life-Time Achievement Award 2008 by Nuclear Age Peace
Foundation. These were bestowed upon him in recognition of his unstinted
commitment and concrete undertakings in support of the concept and
culture of peace through his long and fruitful career and the continuing
efforts through the work of WICPER.
Weeramantry International Centre for Peace Education and Research (WICPER)
is an organization which has pioneered a number of sustainable
development programmes at international, regional and local levels.
WICPER, Justice Weeramantry’s foundation in Sri Lanka is considered an
official civil society member of UNGC since February 2011. The forum is
open for senior management, sustainability champions, the corporate and
the public sector.
The Global Compact is a strategic policy initiative for businesses
that are committed to aligning their operations and strategies with ten
universally accepted principles in the areas of human rights, labour,
environment and anti-corruption.
Global Compact today stands as the largest corporate citizenship and
sustainability initiative in the world, with over 8700 corporate
participants and stakeholders from over 130 countries. |
