Electricity meter manufacture to be streamlined

Electricity meter manufacturing will be streamlined using state-of-the-art technology to meet the increasing demand for local electricity meters, Power and Energy Ministry sources said. Ante Leco Metering Company (Pvt) Ltd which is a joint venture between the Lanka Electric Company (LECO) and the Ante Meter Company of China has expedited the commercial manufacturing of electricity meters locally while helping to retain valuable foreign currency.

Ante Leco Metering Company (Pvt) Ltd has been successful in catering to the total meter demand of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB). LECO sources said over 355,000 meters have been manufactured last year to meet the CEB meter demand. Over 30,000 meters are produced monthly by the LECO since the demand has grown tremendously for the locally made meters. The company expects to meet the local annual demand and soon to export meters to other South Asian countries.

The shortage of meters has been reduced while saving a huge amount spent to purchase foreign meters, the CEB sources said.
