Several stranded in Malaysia: Bogus job agent nabbed

A suspect who had defrauded unsuspecting job seekers of several lakhs of rupees, posing as a foreign employment agent and left them stranded in Malaysia, was arrested by the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment Special Investigation Unit with the assistance of the Chilaw Police at Weerakumandaluwa, Bangadeniya yesterday morning. Officers also seized a stock of passports and visa applications from his possession.

Investigations revealed that the suspect had obtained sums ranging from Rs 200,000 to Rs 350,000 from several persons promising them jobs abroad and had taken them to Malaysia and left them in the lurch. Four of the stranded persons had later found their way back to Sri Lanka while two others are said to be still in Malaysia waiting for an opportunity to return home. The suspect was due to be produced before the Chilaw District Judge.
