Fines against rogue traders yield Rs 20 m

Rs.20 million had been earned through fines imposed during raids by the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) during January to March this year. The CAA conducted nearly 13000 raids against deceptive and unfair trade practices by errant traders during this period.

"We received this income of Rs 20 million by filing court cases against 8000 errant traders in the respective Magistrate's Courts," CAA chairman Rumi Marzook said.

Meanwhile, mobile vans carrying CAA officials were deployed to nab errant traders engaged in unfair trade practices. He further said that Cooperatives and Internal Trade Minister Johnston Fernando has directed CAA officials to intensify their raids on rogue traders throughout the island.
