Roshini and Priyantha take Rotary golf titles

Roshini Sangari (Nett Combined Ladies Winner) and Priyantha Kumara (Nett Combined Men’s Winner) put up sparkling displays at the third annual Rotary International Golf Championship organized by the Rotary Club of Kandy and organized by the Victoria Golf and Country Resort and worked off at the Victoria Golf Course at Rajawella off Kandy.

Roshini Sangari playing to a handicap of 22 registered a total combined score of 71 Nett. On the first day she got 34 Nett and followed with 37 on the second day. Finishing Runner-up was expatriate Linda Harris who registered a very close Nett score of 71 playing to a handicap of 23. In third place was Fran de Mel with 62 Nett playing to a handicap of 25.

Priyantha Kumara playing to a handicap of 20 registered a Nett score of 77 to win the combined nett title for men.

But close on his heels was Australian born Errol Johnston who also registered the Nett score of 77 playing to a handicap of 12. But the tie breaker of count back on the last nine holes edged out the Australian who got 16:36 against 16:37 by Priyantha Kumara. Once again it was a very close decision.

In the first round Errol Johnston got 41 Nett against 40 by Priyantha Kumara. But in the second round Priyantha Kumara made amends to score 37 Nett while Errol Johnston made 36 Nett to equal the final scores paving the way for the count back to break the tie. Sam Gunaratne finished second runner up with a Nett score of 74 playing to a handicap of 9 before returning to ‘Old Blighty’ to play club cricket.

Suwen Selvaratnam won the combined Ladies event with a Gross score of 87. The Combined Gross Men’s winner was Sam Gunaratne with a Gross score of 92.
