IGP to New Year shoppers:
Look out for pickpockets, snatch thieves

IGP Mahinda Balasooriya yesterday warned the public to be extra
vigilant during the festive season shopping since pickpockets and snatch
thieves were on the prowl ready to cash in from the congestion. Police
Spokesman SP Prishantha Jayakody told the Daily News that IGP
Balasooriya had instructed him to deploy a sufficient number of police
personnel to man market places, bus stands and railway stations to
prevent pick pocketing, chain snatching and other crimes.

He added that Police personnel have now been deployed in several
places across the country.
The Police Spokesman said that this year people appeared to celebrate
the New Year with much enthusiasm.
This has provided an opportunity for thieves and pickpockets to have
a field day, he said.
He asked the public to refrain from carrying excessive amounts of
money and to avoid wearing jewellery when shopping.
SP Jayakody said that the Police has strengthened the Traffic Police
surveillance too during this season to nab motorists who drive under the
influence of liquor leading to accidents. He added that stern action
will be taken against reckless drivers.
