Coconut seedlings for 2.5 m families

The Coconut Development and Plantation Industries Ministry will provide five coconut seedlings each for 2.5 million families in the country.

“Ten million seedlings have already been distributed while another 10 million will soon be distributed in Divisional Secretary’s Divisions this year”, said Coconut Development and Plantation Industries Minister Jagath Pushpakumara at a coconut fertilizer subsidy distribution ceremony held at Agricultural Centre, Alawwa.

He said that action has been taken to distribute coconut seedlings to the public sector under this project. Research has identified these coconut seedlings as high yielding varieties. Coconut Cultivation Board provides instructions for cultivation.

This programme is launched in keeping with the Mahinda Chinthana to strengthen the coconut industry, the Minister added.

Kurunegala district parliamentarian Shantha Bandara and North Western Provincial Councillor Sumith Kumara Rajapaksa also spoke.
