Standard time from midnight

The government yesterday declared the country’s standard time which needs to be adhered to by media organizations, telecommunication companies and all institutions in general by law. According to the Internal Trade and Cooperatives Ministry spokesman, President Mahinda Rajapaksa declared Sri Lanka’s standard time at Temple Trees yesterday evening.

The special Gazette Notification in this regard was to be issued by Internal Trade and Cooperatives Minister Johnston Fernando from midnight yesterday. He said that the use of standard time by all institutions has been made compulsory by this Gazette Notification and this will help use correct time for all auspicious activities, he added.

The Minister was to issue the Gazette notification under the Measurement units, Standards and Services Act of 1995.

Meanwhile, the Information Department yesterday said the use of standard time will help the country’s development activities.

It said the declaration of standard time will help Sri Lanka comply with international time standards. The standard time of the country can be viewed on www.sltime.org
