Grooming engineers of the faculty of engineering, Peradeniya will
represent Sri Lanka in the 10th ABU Robocon competition which will be
held in Bangkok, Thailand in September 2011!
The Peradeniya team has been selected by the media sponsor of the
Asia Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) Robocon in Sri Lanka, the
Independent Television Network (ITN), after a local competition which
was competed by University of Peradeniya, University of Moratuwa and
University of Ruhuna. And the ultimate winner was the Peradeniya team.
The Asia-Pacific Robot Contest (ABU Robocon) is an Asian Oceania
College robot competition founded in 2002 by Asia-Pacific Broadcasting
Union. In the competition robots compete to complete a task within a set
period of time.
The contest aims to create friendship among young people with similar
interests who will lead their respective countries in the 21st Century,
as well as help advance engineering and broadcasting technologies in the
region. The event is broadcast in many countries by ABU member
broadcasters.
ABU Robocon 2009 took place in Tokyo on August 21 and 22, and was won
by Harbin Institute of Technology. ABU Robocon 2010 took place in Cairo
on September 21, and was won by University of Electronic Science and
Technology of China giving China its overwhelming fourth win. China
currently holds the record for the most number of wins.
This time the theme of the contest is “Lighting Happiness with
Friendship”. The awards to be given are: ABU Robocon Award, Grand Prix,
1st runner-up, 2nd runner-ups, Best Idea Award, Best Engineering Award,
Best Design Award, including Special Awards.
This time the team will be guided by Dr Lilantha Samaranayake, a
senior lecturer of the department of electrical and electronic
engineering, University of Peradeniya. Media coordination is done by Dr
Manjula Sandirigama of the Public Relations Committee of the faculty and
also the head of the department of Computer Engineering. |
