CEA holds National e-waste management program:
Proper disposal co-ordinated
In order to ensure electronic waste free Sri Lanka the Central
Environmental Authority in collaboration with 14 private companies
National program for E-waste management has been initiated in November
last year.
Usage and improper disposal of electronic equipment have lead to
create diseases. Metal toxins discharged from the electronic equipment
can pollute the water and soil in our environment which cause serious
illnesses, according to medical specialists.
In order to manage this disastrous situation due to improper
management of electronic waste, Central Environmental Authority as the
main regulatory body of environment in Sri Lanka has taken initiatives
to launch national level program for managing electronic waste within
Sri Lanka.
Electronic waste such as computer parts, monitors, televisions,
mobile phones, calculators, audio visual equipments, printers, scanners,
fax machines, air conditioners and all of the home electronic appliances
cause harm to environment because of toxic materials in them.
The aim of this program is to minimize and manage the damage to
environment due to e-waste.
Celebration of National e waste program organized by the Central
Environmental Authority and Metropolitan Ltd held at Shalika Grounds
Narahenpita on April 7 with the participation of Environment Minister
Anura Priyadarshana Yapa.
The Minister said that with the dawn of peace, economic development
of the country is in rapid progress. Along with this development
consumption of modern electronic equipment will also rapidly increase.
Central Environmental Authority Chairman Charitha Herath, CEA
Director General Ramani Ellepola, Environmental Pollution Control CEA,
DDG Muthukudaarachchi, Cannon Singapore and South East Asia CEO Kimora
San, Chairman Metropolitan Sri Lanka J J Ambani and officials from
partner organizations participated at this event.
