Joes clinch under 19 limited over title

Consistency and teamwork brought championship for St Joseph's when they gained a five wicket win in under 19 limited over final encounter over Trinity Kandy played at NCC ground yesterday.

Trinity College, Kandy was all out for 83 runs in 25.2 overs while St Joseph's College surpassed the target in 23.1 overs with five wickets to spare.

The St Joseph's College having won the toss opted to field first and it did not take so long to realize how wise the decision was when Trinity wickets came in a row.

A tidy spell from Josephian captain Roscoe Thattil of 3 for 7 in 5.2 overs and Supeshala Jayathileke who got 3 wickets for 24 and Chathurange Kumara also contributing by taking 2 wickets for 18 runs limited Trinity for 83 all out at the half way mark in the 50 over match.

Except for Janishke Premasinghe who scored 37 and Kavinda Jayasooriya's 12 runs no other Trinity batsman could reach even double figures. The first Trinity batsman was sent back when the score was 12.

Then at regular intervals Josephian bowlers struck and as a result there was no significant partnership to go for a decent score other than a 28 run partnership for the third wicket. In fact it was of no use as the middle order and the rest of the batsman fail to make any noteworthy contribution.

The St Josephs on the other hand seemed confident of chasing the gift like total of 83 from the very first over.

Lose of five wickets did not stop Josephians on ticking the scoreboard. Widusha Jayasinghe the one down batsman was confident of sticking the ball with ease followed by Widusha Jayasinghe's quick 15.

Nevertheless Trinity bowling was decent on the part of Aamil Anaz who took 2 for 12 in his 10 over spell including four maiden overs.

Finally it was Chaturange Kumara to finish the game just before lunch by hitting a six off Akila Jayasundara in the 23 over to make it 84 for five.

Chief scores:

Trinity College, Kandy all out 83 in 25.2 overs. ( Kavinda Jayasooriya 12, Roscoe Thattil 3 for 7, Supesha Jayathileke 3 for 24).

St Joseph's College 84 for five in 23.1 overs (Sadheera Samarawickckrama 29, Roscoe Thattil 15, Widusha Jayasinghe 15, Aamil Anaz 2 for 12, Janushke Premasinghe 2 for 43).
