Navy Spokesperson Commander Kosala Warnakulasuriya told the Daily
News that the Navy made the detection yesterday and seized cannabis
weighing 36 kilograms.
The Navy also arrested two Sri Lankans who were in possession of the
cannabis. They were smuggling the cannabis in a fishing boat in the seas
off Silavathura West.
The Navy Spokesman also added that the suspects disguised themselves
as fishermen. Commander Warnakulasuriya said that the cannabis were
safely packed in several plastic bags. He said it is believed that this
consignment of cannabis was being smuggled from India.
The Navy spokesman further said since surveillance on the cannabis
cultivation has been tightened under the directions of the Defence
Secretary, it appears that certain elements attempt to smuggle cannabis
into the country.
He added that however the sailors arrested the suspects and the Navy
would close all sea routes for smuggling. The Navy handed over the
suspects, cannabis, boats and other equipment to the Police for further
investigations. |
