Neuro trauma unit at CNH

A new neuro trauma unit built at the Colombo National Hospital at a cost of Rs 3,000 million will be opened by President Mahinda Rajapaksa today.

Health Minister Maitripala Sirisena, Saudi Arabia's Finance Minister and Saudi Fund for Development Chairman Dr Ibrahim Al Asaf, Saudi Arabian Ambassador Ahmed A Jawad and several other VIPs will be present.

The 10-storeyed unit consisting of a helipad to receive critical patients has been jointly funded by the Saudi Fund and the Sri Lanka Government.


Fifteen remanded for ragging

Fifteen students of the College of Education were remanded in connection with a ragging incident. The second year students had ragged the first year students while going to the canteen.

The Kopay Police arrested the raggers and produced them before the Jaffna Magistrate.


Call for prison officials to protect female inmates

Prison officials should look at female prison inmates as their mothers, daughters or sisters, Rehabilitation, Prisons and Reforms Minister Chandrasiri Gajadeera said at a Progress Review Meting at his Ministry.

The Minister said prisons officials have the responsibility to protect the female inmates, by acting according to laws and regulation.

It is necessary to ensure the inmates self respect and rebuild their lost honour when they come back to the society, he said.

Ministry Secretary A Dissanayake also participated in the meeting.


Translation Diploma course

The Agalawatta National Language Education and Training Institute has started a one-year translations Diploma course to train those above 25.

Those who have passed the GCE (A-L) examination and are above 25 years are eligible to apply for admission to the training institute to follow this one-year course.

After the successful completion of the course the students will receive a vocational licence.


Power for village

The Ceylon Electricity Board has provided electricity to Nikulagama Gammanaya in Teldeniya. Rs 76,000 has been allocated for this rural electrification scheme.


Road repair plea

The Paldeniya-Koholanwela road which is about five miles in the Pallepola Divisional Secretariat area in the Matale District has been in deplorable state for a long time.

This road belongs to the Provincial Highways Ministry. The road has not been repaired for several years, residents said. Farmers are also unable to transport their agriculture produce to the market as a result.


Water woes

Residents in Madawala Bazzar, Madawalagama, Napanw, Abasingama, Aloka-Mawata, Yahangala and Pihilladeniya area in Pathadumbara Pradeshiya Sabha area complain of water scarcity. They said that they have complained to the National Water Supply and Drainage Board in this regard.


No bus service

The Lewella-Kandy Hospital bus service operated by Kandy South CTB bus depot has been stopped for a long period.

This has caused severe hardship to patients seeking treatment at the hospital.

Patients who are discharged are compelled to hire a private vehicle to reach the bus stand in the town.


New mini bus service

A new mini bus service from Matara to Kandy and Walasmulla to Matale has been started. This bus services is very popular, said commuters in these areas.


Honorary title for Minister

The Asgiriya Maha Vihara Chapter Sangha Sabaha headed by the Maha Nayake Thera has decided to confer the title Deshamamaka Janaprasadana Lanka Putra on Media Minister and Cabinet Spokesman Dr Keheliya Rambukwella.

This is in recognition of his services as Media Spokesman at a time the Government was engaged in the eradication of terrorism from the country. Prime Minister D M Jayaratne and a number of Parliamentarians are due to participate in the ceremony to confer this title on Minister Dr Keheliya Rambukwella at the Asgiri Mahavihara Uposathagara on April 03.


Workshop

The second islandwide free teleconference one day workshop on information technology for provincial correspondents will be held at Narahenpita today. The Information Department conducts the workshop with the coordination of Higher Education Ministry Distance Education Service.

Five Hundred Provincial correspondents in 19 districts will participate in the workshop in 20 centres


Acrobatic shows

The 'Nanjing Acrobatic Troupe' will perform at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium from March 31 to April 30 (daily at 3.30 pm and 6.30 pm).

The Nalanda College OBA, Colombo is orgnaizing the shows.
