Plantations Rugby Sevens today

The seventh annual inter Plantation Rugby Sevens organized by Dickoya Maskeliya Cricket Club and sponsored by Sri Lanka Telecom and Mobitel will be worked off at Darawela grounds in Dickoya today commencing at 8 am.

A total of 15 plantation companies have entered this popular tournament and Agalawatte Plantations is the latest entrant to be in the fray. Talawakelle Plantations are the defending champions said the President of the Dickoya Maskeliya CC, Dushan Ratwatte.

The participating teams are Kegalle Plantations. Kelani Valley Plantations, Nuwara Eliya Plantations, Malwatte Plantations, Elpitiya Plantations, Elkaduwa Plantations, Kahawatte Plantations, Maskeliya Plantations, Watawala Plantations, Bogowantalawa Plantations, Kotagala Plantations, Pussellawa Plantations and Balangoda Plantations.

Dushan Ratwatte said that this inter plantation rugby sevens will herald the local rugby tournaments and has turned out to be extremely popular drawing the best rugby talent from the plantations sector in the country.

It is an all island tournament. He thanked Sri Lanka Telecom and Mobitel for coming forward to sponsor this tournament which will no doubt rekindle the interest in rugby in the plantations especially in upcountry.

A every attempt is being made by Dickoya to bring back rugby to its pristine glory, providing employment to young ruggerites.

Dickoya Maskeliya CC is 142 years old.
