Colombo chess tourney a success

Colombo District Youth Chess Championships 2011 concluded at Royal College, Colombo recently. The Chess Federation of Sri Lanka organized the event which was the most prestigious event for the youth Chess players in Colombo.

The event was a selection round for the coming National Youth Chess Championship 2011 to be held from April 7 to 10, 2011 at the Colombo Public Library Auditorium.

Accordingly players scored more than 3 1/2 points out of 5 were eligible to participate in the big event.

There were a total of 12 separate, individual events (Under 8, 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18 years) for boys and girls. The events were held according to the Swiss System over 5 rounds.

Around 500 players participated while under 10 boys event showed the highest participation of 120 lads.

The results.

Under 8 Girls

1. Gihansa Sarathchandra, Musaeus College (5 points), 2. Yasasvi Rajini Ediriweera, Vidyakara Balika Vidyalaya (4 points), 3. Hashini Rameesha Prathapasinghe, Sri Sangamittha BV (4 points)

Under 8 boys

1. Ovin Vidmal Gamage, Isipathana College (5 points), 2. S Jeyaram, Hindu College (5 points), 3. P Dinitha Vimarshana Peiris, Moratu Maha Vidyalaya (4½ points)

Under 10 Girls

1. Thihansa Dewwanthi Sarathchandra, Musaeus C. (5 points), 2. Hasandi Yapa Abeywardena, Visakha V. (4½ points), 3. Binudi Senarath Yapa, Visakha V. (4½ points)

Under 10 boys

Under 12 Girls

Under 14 Girls
