A special meeting to enlighten school principals, teachers and student leaders selected from the Tissamaharama Educational region, of the new education reforms was held recently at the Debarawewa National School under the patronage of Education Minister Bandula Gunawardena. Pianos and green boards were also distributed among selected schools. Minister Gunawardena handing over such equipment to a principal from the area. External Affairs Minister Prof G L Peiris and Namal Rajapaksa, MP were also present.


Adhistana Pooja

The Colombo YMBA has organized an Adhistana Pooja and a religious ceremony to invoke blessings and pass merit to Japanese people affected by the recent earthquake and tsunami. It will be held at the Bodhiratanaramaya, Bauddhaloka Mawatha, Colombo 7 on March 25 from 4 pm to 6 pm. The ceremony will be conducted by Ven Elle Gunawansa Nayaka Thera.

The Colombo YMBA invited members from the Japanese Embassy and Buddhist organizations in Colombo to participate in this religious event.


Rahula OBA AGM

The 49th Annual General Meeting of Rahula College, Matara, Old Boys' Association Colombo Branch will be held on April 3 at 6.30 pm at Shalika Hall, Park Road, Colombo 5.

Central Bank Assistant Governor P Samarasiri, an old boy of Rahula College will be the chief guest.

The annual award of scholarship to needy under graduates and students who excelled in year 5, GCE (O-L) and (A-L) examinations will be held at the same venue. Rs 744,000 will be offered to 119 students. Buddhika Pathirana, MP will also participate.


Fund raising fair

Village Fair organized by Peter Weerasekera Children's Home will be held on March 26 and 27 at Peter Weerasekera Children's Home, Dambuwa, Buthpitiya.

The fair is being held to raise funds for the maintenance of the Children's Home. Nearly new clothes, crockery, tea and other groceries all gifted by friends and commercial establishments will be available at the Village Fair.

Lasantha Alagiyawanna and John Amaratunga will be the Chief Guests on March 26 while Yoshida International School, Sapugaskanda Principal Ranjini Fernando will be the Chief Guest on March 27.


National conference

The fifth national conference of the All Ceylon Samurdhi Development Society will be held at the Upcountry Arts Society Hall in Kandy on March 31 at 10 am under the patronage of Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa.


Music and dance concert

Ranga Rata, a music and dance concert staged by physically handica- pped children will be held at Colombo Tower Hall Theatre on March 26, at 3.30 pm to raise funds to facilitate their educational needs.

The concert has been organized by Exceptional Children's Educational Development Foundation.


Arrested for disturbing peace

Three persons including a woman were arrested by Naula police on charges of illegal assembly and disturbing the public peace in Koongahawela area.

They were produced before Naula Magistrate Rangani Gamage who released them on Rs 1,500 cash bail each with two sureties each Rs 100,000. The case was postponed for April 18.


Treasure hunters pay price

Four suspects who pleaded guilty of having trespassed an archaeological site and engaged in hunting for a hidden treasure were fined a total of Rs 880,000 by Anuradhapura Additional Magistrate Chandima Edirimanne.

Another suspect who pleaded not guilty was remanded till March 30.


Four arrested

Four suspects were arrested by Alawathugoda Police for transporting 170 kgs of beef without a permit. They were produced before Kandy Additional Magistrate Thanuja Jayasinghe and fined a total of Rs 45,000.


Drunk drivers in hot water

Twenty five persons including an Assistant Divisional Secretary, a priest and an army captain were arrested for drunk driving by the Kandy Police motor cycle unit during an operation carried out in Galagedara town Wednesday. Fifteen others were arrested for other traffic offences. Investigations are continuing.


Trishaw driver assaulted

A trishaw driver was assaulted by two unidentified persons riding on a motor cycle in the Galgamuwa police division yesterday.

He was admitted to the Galgamuwa hospital and later transferred to the Kurunegala General Hospital. The trishaw was fully damaged. No one was arrested and the police are investigating. Meanwhile, a clash erupted between UNP and UPFA supporters at the Wariyapola Padeniya junction. One was seriously injured and rushed to the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital, Wariyapola police said.

Nona Hareesha

Nona Hareesha, a mother of four, is suffering from Mitral Valve disease a heart disease. She is residing at Bamunumulla, Athulugama in Bandaragama. She is advised immediate heart surgery by Consultant Cardiac Surgeon, Dr Kesava Dev to cure her. The cost will be around Rs 700,000. As she is unable to bear this amount, she requests public to help her. The public can deposit their contributions to her Savings Account No 121 200 174053948 at People's Bank branch at Bandaragama.

 

 


 


Devale custodian in custody

A custodian in a devale at Wanathawilluwa has been taken into custody by Wanathawilluwa police. She had given a substance to a woman to drink saying that the woman had swallowed something given by somebody to win her love, by magic means.

She died after being admitted to the Puttalam hospital.



Film producer Sumitra Peiris celebrated her 77th birthday yesterday. A ceremony in this connection was held at her residence with the participation of several artistes where her biography book Sumitra was launched. Postal Services Minister Jeevan Kumaratunge and film artistes Ravindra Randeniya, Sabitha Perera, Sangeetha Weeraratne, Sherine Kumaratunge and Sudharma Shanthikumara were also present. Several people were injured when a passenger bus collided head on with a lorry at Ampitiya junction, Kandy yesterday. Meanwhile, three people died and 28 others were injured when a passenger bus plunged into a precipice at Namunukula in the Passara Police division.
