KOICA provides assistance
The Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and the Disaster
Management Ministry held project commencement meetings from March 6 to
17 at the Meteorological Department. It was intended to work out details
of the Project for "Development of Communications, Ocean and
Meteorological Satellite (COMS) Data Receiving/Analysis System in Sri
Lanka.
Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) and Samsung SDS and their
Sri Lankan counterparts participated.
The Korean Government established the East Asia Climate Partnership
program at the G8 summit in July 2008 to help developing countries
respond to climate change through ODA projects. KOICA, in charge of
implementing Korea Government's grant aid and technical cooperation, is
implementing projects aiming at building developing countries' capacity
to address climate change. Under the program, this two million dollar
project was launched from March, 2011 to build capacity of Sri Lankan
Meteorological officials and engineers through provision of Digitalized
Climate Satellite data Receiving/Analysis System, dispatch of Korean
meteorological experts and training of Sri Lankan personnel by KOICA and
KMA over a two-year period.
This project will contribute to upgrading Sri Lankan capability of
weather forecasting and mitigating loss of life caused by climate
change-related natural disasters and strengthen partnership and
cooperation in the area of meteorology between the two countries. |
