No fluctuation in radiation levels

Radiation levels of the air in the Sri Lankan atmosphere have not fluctuated during the last week, Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Authority (SLAEA) Chairman Dr W Abeywickreme told the Daily News yesterday.

He said that the first report on air monitoring which includes results of samples gathered from eight locations around the country was released yesterday.

The air monitoring was conducted in Kelaniya, Galle, Matara, Manner, Kandy, Peradeniya, Anuradhapura and Trincomalee.

"The radiation level in the air of these locations is equal to the prior amount. Therefore, the tests confirm that the radiation leak in Fukushima Daichi nuclear plant has no effect on the Sri Lankan atmosphere so far," he explained. The air monitoring on these eight locations was started on March 16 and the Authority is continuing these tests.
