National Mosquito Control Week:

Over 5,267 mosquito breeding places identified

Schools to be checked today:

Health Ministry officials who checked over 9,234 places under the mosquito control week program yesterday, identified over 5,267 mosquito breeding places. Another 840 places were identified as larvae breeding areas while 320 people were also warned, the Health Ministry sources said.

The Health Ministry launched the mosquito control week with effect from yesterday to control diseases spread by mosquitoes in seven days.

Mosquito breeding areas will be identified through public awareness campaigns this week while preventive methods will be taken to stop diseases from spreading.

The program was initiated on the instruction of Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena.

The first day was dedicated to identifing mosquito breeding areas in Government and private institutions. Around 320 people were warned and legal action will be taken against them if they fail to follow the guidelines. Notices were issued to them urging to take steps to clean their surroundings.

If they fail to clean the area within two weeks, legal action will be taken against them, a Health Ministry official said. All schools will be examined today under this program. The police and the army are supporting the Health Ministry to launch this program.
