UNASUR Treaty presented to UN
Ecuador: Ecuador’s Permanent Representative to the United
Nations, Francisco Carrion formally presented to the UN Office of Legal
Affairs the Treaty establishing the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR).
This step begins the process of registration and publication by the UN,
in accordance with the provisions of the UN Charter and the treaty
itself.
The International Convention came into force on Friday, 30 days after
the implementation of the ninth instrument of ratification by Uruguay.
Nine of the 12 Parliaments of UNASUR member countries have validated
the instrument of ratification of the Treaty, allowing it to come into
force almost three years after it was signed in Brasilia May 23, 2008.
