Anti-Berlusconi demos held across Italy

Italy: Hundreds of thousands of people have taken to the streets in towns across Italy to protest against Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's policies. The Government has long been accused of adopting policies to benefit Berlusconi, the Press TV correspondent in Rome reported from the demonstration on Saturday.

Many students and teaching staff have blamed Berlusconi for slowly robbing the youth of a promising future in the country, she added. The education sector has been through a lot in recent years such as reforms, job losses, and budget cuts as a response to the global financial crisis. Berlusconi presented a reform plan on Friday that seeks to reduce Italian magistrates' power in courtrooms by forcing them to choose a career as a judge or a prosecutor.

Berlusconi's opponents say he only took the measure to take revenge for legal cases he is currently facing. The demonstrations, held in Rome and 100 other cities across the country, are not expected to resolve any ongoing problems, but were perhaps a sign that citizens are fed up and want to be the ones behind the wheel for a change.
