Joes regain trophy

St. Joseph’s College regained the Rev. Fr. Peter A Pillai Memorial Shield when they defeated their traditional rivals St. Peter’s College by 73 runs in their 37th annual Battle of the Saints limited overs cricket encounter worked off at the P. Saravanamuttu Oval on Saturday.

Half centuries from skipper Rosco Thatil and Chaturanga Kumara carried St. Joseph’s College to 230 for 9 from their 50 overs after they had won the toss and elected to bat first.

The Peterites in reply folded up for 157 runs in 41 overs with fast bowler Dinal Dhambarage claiming a three wicket haul to clinch the Best Bowlers award. In addition Chaturanga Kumara and Rosco Thatil were named Best Batsman and Man of the Match respectively.

Lahiru Milantha of St. Peter’s was named as the Best Fielder.

St. Joseph’s: 230 for 9 in 50 overs (S. Samarawickrema 30, R. Thatil 60, C. Kumara 54, V. Jayasinghe 26, N. Perera 2 for 38, L. Jayaratne 2 for 50).

St. Peter’s: 157 in 41 overs (S. Fernando 28, D. Perera 21, N. Perera 37, D. Dhambarage 3 for 28)
