In aid of ANCL relief program

A large consignment of essential food items donated by employees attached to Casual Ware Apparels Ltd in Jordan including Sri Lankan, Indian and Bangladeshi workers under a program initiated by the proprietor of the company and Matale district MP Lakshman Vasantha Perera in aid of the Lake House relief program for flood-affected people was handed over to Lake House Chairman Bandula Padmakumara for distribution at a ceremony at Lake House yesterday. A 22-member group of officers following the Staff Course at the Pakistan Naval War College, Lahore, accompanied by their Directing Staff visited the Naval Headquarters in Colombo on March 9, 2011 on a study tour. They were warmly received by Naval Operations Director General Rear Admiral Jayantha Perera.



Four lorries in accident
Traffic along the Colombo-Trincomalee road was disrupted for nearly two hours yesterday due to an accident involving four lorries which occurred at Kooratiya Kanda around 6.30 am. Woman dies in roller mishap

An elderly woman died on the spot when she was run down by a roller at Thammennapura, Anuradhapura.The roller had gone out of the control due to a mechanical problem.


Freak chick

A freak chick with four legs born in a large scale poultry farm at Kovilyaya, Mahiyangana has become an attraction among curious residents in the area.


Exorcist waylaid

An exorcist who was returning in a three-wheeler to Dambulla bus stand at around 7pm after performing a ritual at a residence in Rathmalagahaela, was waylaid by thieves and robbed of Rs 57,000 and a mobile phone.


Rent, loan recovery up at NHDA

Colombo District Secretary S Hapuarachchi said house rents and loans recovery for January by the Colombo South office of the National Housing Development Authority shows an increase surpassing the targets.

The District Secretary disclosed this fact when he addressed the Housing meeting of the Colombo District Housing Committee held at the Colombo District Secretariat Auditorium recently.

Colombo South office Manager R M S D Karunaratne mentioned at the meeting that the sum to be collected in January was Rs 2.85 million but Rs 5.8 million was collected by the National Housing Development Authority. The increase in the amount of rents and loans was the result of the officers efficiency and dedication, he said.


Two women murdereda

A man who entered a house at Boyawalana in the Alawwa police area, stabbed and murdered two women.

The owner of the house and the servant died after admission to the Alawwa hospital.

A police team headed by OIC Alawwa Mahinda Pushpakumara is investigating.

Ganja dealer arrested

A main ganja dealer who engaged in the business in Dambulla and the suburbs was arrested by Dambulla police.

According to police, this illegal business was carried out by the suspect for a long time.

He was produced before Dambulla Magistrate Court and remanded. The suspect is a resident of the Kandalama area.


Electrification scheme opens

The Horowpathana, Mahakirigala Wewa rural electrification scheme undertaken at a cost of Rs 20 million was inaugurated by Agrarian Services and Wildlife Minister S M Chandrasena Monday. Around 368 families will benefit.


Fourteen candidates arrested

Fourteen candidates contesting the local government elections have been taken into custody for flouting election regulations so far said Senior DIG (Elections) Gamini Navaratne.

He said another 128 persons were taken into police custody in respect of 124 complaints received by police and two of them have been remanded.


Research disclosure ceremony

The disclosure of results of 24 researches conducted by the ayurvedic physicians who were serving their internship on the indigenous medical methods took place at a ceremony held at the Navinna Bandaranaike Ayurvedic Research Centre under the patronage of Indigenous Medicine Minister Salinda Dissanayake on March 8.

One of the objectives of these researches is to protect the indigenous system of medicine which were being forgotten. Another objective was to take indigenous medicines to international level.

This function was attended by Ministry Secretary B D Dahanayake, Ayurveda Research Centre Director Dr H L Obeysekera and Ayurveda Commissioner Palitha Weerakone.

Service with a difference

An extraordinary service of 'Praise and Worship' will be held March 13 at 10.30 am at the Cathedral of Christ the Living Saviour (adjoining the BMICH) Colombo 7 under the banner of the ministry of 'Peace for All'.

As a special feature, personal prayer would be made available for the individual needs of the congregation.

The Speaker and Minister at this service, which is open to all, is Dr Vijaya Corea who will speak on 'Fear agitation, stress and emotional disturbance - could these be in the will of God?'


Bridge collapse

Residents in several villages beyond Balakotunna are inconvenienced after the bridge at Balakotunna on the Balangoda-Wewelwatta road collapsed a week ago. The bus service is only up to the bridge and it is not according to a time table.
