Vegetable cultivation to be boosted

The Southern Regional Agriculture Ministry has taken measures to boost vegetable cultivation in the region.

According to Southern Provincial Agriculture Ministry, top priority has been extended for the cultivation of many varieties of vegetables.

Nearly 2,800 hectare of land have already been brought under cultivation, while the production target has been over 50 metric tons per month. According to the SPC Agrarian Minister Wijaya S Weerasinghe, the Ministry has already taken steps to cultivate garlic, green gram, maize, ground nuts, ginger, cow-pea, big onions and kurakkan.

Nearly 800 hectare are to be brought under cultivation and the production target would be over 1,500 metric tons per month, Ministry sources said.
