Overstaying visitor given ‘unusual’ punishment

A doctor is alleged to have cut a woman’s identity card with a pair of scissors as punishment for staying in a ward for more than the allocated time.

The woman had visited a ward at the Peradeniya Teaching Hospital to see a patient. The doctor had found that the woman was in the ward even after the one-hour time allocated to outsiders to see patients and taken her identity card and cut into pieces. The woman had lodged a complaint with Peradeniya Police.

The woman was from Trincomalee and as she had not been able to prove her identity following the incident, she had lodged the complaint.
