Lankan health service lauded

The Health Service in Sri Lanka is of a high standard when compared to other countries said Health Minister of the Punjab State in India Prof Lakshmi Kanth Chawla.

She made this observation at a discussion held at the Kandy Provincial Health Services Director’s office auditorium Wednesday. Central Province Health Services Director Shanthi Samarasinghe presided.

Prof Chawla is leading a health team from Punjab on a study tour of the provincial health system in Sri Lanka. Prof Chawla said that while Sri Lanka had a very encouraging health index, the WHO had praised the health development program in the Central Province as excellent.

It was for this reason that they visited the Central Province on a study tour. Chawla said the low maternal and infant mortality rate in Sri Lanka proved that it had achieved successful results in its march towards millennium development goals.

The maternal and infant mortality rate in Punjab was much higher when compared to Sri Lanka.
