A number of incidents of corruption have been recorded within the
Department for a long time. "We have received many complaints from the
public about the rampant corruption in the institution," the Minister
said.
“We decided to intensify efforts to combat corruption and established
an appropriate working environment in the Department. Maximum efforts
will be made with employees' help to curb corruption and enable the
Department to build a good reputation,” Welgama said. The root cause of
corruption should be addressed by enforcing laws and through supervision
as the basis. The corruption should be continuously removed through
intensifying reform and ensuring employees are incorruptible and
self-disciplined, he said.
It is reported that several officials in the Department have engaged
in illegal activities in issuing licence. “This is a bad trend and
should be stopped,” he said.
“We must have public servants who serve the people. They should not
act to fleece the public who visit the Department on legitimate
business,” he said.
He said that investigations have commenced to nab fraudsters and
corrupt officials. Welgama said that stern action will be taken against
officials who are proved guilty.
