EP delegation commends Govt

The European Parliament (EP) delegation commended the government’s commitment towards development in the post war situation in the country. Jean Lambert who led the EP delegation said that they were impressed by the future plans which the government presented to them during their visit.

She said that a significant improvement in infrastructure is taking place in the Northern Province.

Lambert commended the improvement in social factors such as education, health, roads and water supply. She praised the government’s plan to recruit Tamil speaking police personnel.

The European Parliamentary members were participating at a press conference at the Cinnamon Grand Hotel yesterday to conclude the talks in the framework of the sixth Inter Parliamentary Meeting.

Responding to a question raised by a journalist she said that the Sri Lankan Government considers the GSP plus relief issue as a closed case and does not want to pursue it any longer.

However she said that European Union is ready to assist Sri Lanka with business and enterprise investment, training and skills development and marketing.

She also noted that the delegation did not experience any difficulty with regard to the accessibility to the North during their visit.

The EP delegation had visited Menikfarm village and had interacted with the people. During their visit they also called on Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa, Ministers, Opposition MPs and various parties and civil society representatives.
